So, being a bit of a nintendo fanboy, I've gotten really excited about applying textures to the game. (Not as much on making my own textures, but I could do that too, if I wanted to...) The ASH programs (particularly CUPASH - the GIMP mod was awesome) helped out a lot, and at this point I've been able to do about everything I'd want to with the game itself. I just think it could be made easier.
So here's my fantasy - a homebrew application for the Wii that holds textures (pcs, pac, or tga for portraits) in one or more folders and provides a nice GUI (with background music!) that allows the user to easily identify what textures to place over which ones already in the game. It could then copy those files (probably converting some with mods of lz77ex and cupash) to the corresponding locations in the private folder.
Sound cool? I know, it's sort of a dream (especially from someone who has no experience in programming for the Wii OR the PC), but I think a lot of fans would benefit from something so convenient (For that reason, I could make the claim that it's project-relevant).
So, I came here hoping I could find someone who's interested and who knows what he's doing in order to make this dream take off.
So, what do you think? I know it sounds hugely ambitious, but it's a cool idea, right?

As far as swapping out files and such... I think that would be highly possible --- hell, I might be able to pull that off if I leech enough code from open source projects.
But...
That leaves the issue of replacing CSPs --- which... is REALLY helpful in selecting custom characters --- unless someone were to write up a wii variation of the program to repack it... and it would probably take a while

Making a Wii port of any program should be easy if you have the source code (though you can only have one program running so you'd have to link in parts of the other programs). How ever ntcompress is needed to compile CSP.

Great idea. Although it would probably be even easier if every texture were already on the SD card. The program you're suggesting could simply rename the files to load the textures. The textures themselves could either be identified by name or possibly by a small pic.
As for the CSPs, is it possible to trick the game into loading them individually instead of from an archive? I still haven't used CSPs yet because of all the errors. I'd love to be able to see CSPs for all the textures I put on the SD card.
If anyone can succesfully load unarchived CSPs, maybe we could do the same with items, and even SOUNDS! ;D I'd love to hear the Forbidden Five again!

Heck you could make a Brawl SDK homebrew app.

The textures themselves could either be identified by name or possibly by a small pic. That's actualy what I was thinking - to have the files stored on the SD card. I've got another couple of ideas, too. If this whole thing were to catch on it'd be great to make to come up with some online service that could download textures straight to the SD card through the Wii, and bypass the computer completely. (Just like the homebrew browser, except for textures.) Then you'd only need a PC at all if you want to make textures. Of course, that part's especially ambitious. You'd need some online server, and you'd need mojo enough to organize everyone's textures. (That's one of the reasons I came here, though. The texture gallery that's been put up is a great resource...) Anyway, I think that part should be held in reserve. Heck you could make a Brawl SDK homebrew app. Uh, forgive me. Again, I'm not entirely sure what I'm talking about. What's an SDK?

SDK stands for Software development kit. It would be similar to the Revolution SDK used by companies to make games for the Wii.

If it helps any, I could volunteer to organize textures for the online server portion if this ever gets anywhere...
