Then someone should get on writing tools to replace the SDK ones. Making any kind of application or tool for modifying a console game is also violating copyright. Assuming that the Gameshark and Action Replay developers legally obtained their SDKs from Nintendo (or did they even need them?) does that mean that any codes made by the fans are illegal? I know of some that permanently modify your game, particularly in Pokemon games. This whole thing makes me wonder about the legality of Action Replay and the like, even Powersaves. Technically, we're not modifying Brawl because due to the nature of optical storage media, we can't change data on the disc. Of course, this doesn't apply to backups. We're only modifying how Brawl is played. And no, I'm not deluding myself on the legality of the situation, I just want to know where the line is drawn. Anyway, back on topic. Dantarion, your ideas are incredible. I'd love to go to a popup-free site without any annoying bot-check pics or wait times to download textures. I will gladly submit my stuff to your site once it's ready.

Codes are different. It does not use the SDK at all. It does modify a game, mostly temporarily. It doesn't modify the data on the Disk, just how it's read. Powersaves are fine, because you just copy data that the game creates. Codes that change your game permanently don't violate any copyright or license. so long as it doesn't modify the data physically on the disk.
The only licensed code GS or AR guys needed to get were the coding to boot their disk. Using Homebrew software is also technically legal, so long as it doesn't use the coding from the SDK or anything licensed. What would make it illegal is what the homebrew's use and intention is. It can't circumvent any copyright protection.
Using Gecko OS isn't illegal. Using codes to modify games to use external files (IE Skins you have on the SD) isn't technically illegal. What makes using skins illegal is that you had to use applications from the SDK to create them. Gecko OS isn't supposed to be used to run applications that modify licensed/commercial code.

is there gonna be a rating system, so users can rate textures, and counter for # of downloads per each texture, or say a top 100 most downloads list and top 100 highest rating list, Those would be interesting to look at, just make it so that everytime somebody wants to download a texture they have to rate the texture from 1 to 10

Before you work on it, don't you think you should ask all the big time sites if it is okay to use their work?

I am still just working on the upload/storage backend, but this stuff will happen. I am going to finish the upload stuff first, so that artists can begin uploading textures to brawltex, before I finish the downloading part. So, for a while, BrawlTex will function as a glorified screenshot gallery

(We're going to dissuade him, if we keep up with this legality chat >_<) Just ... more simply, without thinking about the whole creation process ... The pcs and pac files are copyrighted matérial, aren't they ? Sooo ... modifying copyrighted material then distributing it, I'm sure that would be the first thing an employer could possibly think of. Well, not that it really matters a lot. Normally, if you present it correctly, that shouldn't be a problem. Well, I'll give my ideas and questions, since I had missed this thread : 1) How much time do you estimate it is going to take ? Just a rough idea ... >_> Weeks ? Monthes ? Summer ? Christmas ? 2010 ? Just a little estimation from you. 2) I'm a bit worried about the boards ... Basically, the actual presentation BUT with links to MegaUpload and Photobucket replaced by links to the website ? Would that work for you ? I would not like the forums to be deserted by the lack of interesting content ... 3) The rating thing seems like a very good idea. However, what about age ratings ? Ever thought of that ? There's some really crude textures out there ... 4) A somewhat touchy subject : The ads. How is the website going to be financed ? 5) Will you marry me ? /jk Anyway, you have my full and entire support on this enterprise. I can't really help, except spreading the word, but I'll follow this very closely. Good Luck !

Since a lot of textures are just characters from another game or a T.V. Show or anime. Shouldn't there be something in the description and search about that? I mean where the character is from.

yeah, hosting the textures of your community sounds a great advance for you guys, but be sure to don't have problems with the Badwidth limit like us (yeah, that "Suspended Domain" in our site it's caused by bandwidth overuse and it's the second time, and it's understable, with all the textures, BrawlHost, EE textures, the BCHC Forum, etc. >_<), but if you are going to host only textures, probably you will not get that problem. XD
