I've recently stumbled upon a rather unusual breed of dA users. They go around dA reporting deviations that they decide is either miscategorized or is violating copyright. Seems like a noble venture, right? I can assure you that nobility escapes most, if not all of these users.
Shortly after submitting my first set of textures, they were reported for misplaced category, and moved to my scraps. I wasn't upset, but I was surprised. I thought I found the perfect category later on, but some random person (most likely the same one that reported my stuff earlier) came on my page and discussed the issue in my journal. I was glad he talked to me before he reported anything. I managed to find a solution he agreed to (and even complimented).
Starshadow wasn't so lucky. His stuff was reported, and some disgruntled mod came through and deleted over half of his stuff. I'm hoping that whoever reported him didn't find him by seeing his stuff in my faves, but that scenario indicates that the same user that came onto my page could have been the one to report Star's stuff. He posted a journal about it and seemed like he was going to quit dA, and even texture hacking. But he recently came back with a new one yesterday saying he's going to try harder to make his stuff less appealing for miscat reporters.
I don't want any of this to happen again, so I'm going to do something about it using this thread. I've researched the most likely categories for texture hacks, but the best candidates still had copyright issues. So I found a few loopholes for those of you who would like to show their textures on dA.
First off is getting the textures to show up on your page. For subscribers, this process is simplified. Submit your textures to scraps first. Then try placing your textures in a folder and using the Gallery Folder module to display the stuff in it. I haven't been able to try this since I don't have a sub, but it should work.
For everyone else, there is only one category besides Scraps I've seen so far that allows copyrighted content: the Desktop Screenshots category. Before you submit pics of your textures, they must be contained within a valid screenshot of your desktop. Check my page for a couple examples. This will allow your textures to be shown within the Newest module on your dA page. Since it only shows up to four pics at a time, if you have more than four textures to show off, the others can be submitted straight to scraps.
Now your textures can be seen by anyone that visits your page, but considering that many of us have more than four textures, we need a way to show them in the gallery. This can be accomplished by featuring them. Just go to your gallery, click edit, click the blue arrow under you textures and select the option to show (or feature) them in your gallery. Now when random users browse your gallery, they'll still see your textures.
I hope this was helpful. Nobody should have to go through what Star did.
