my friend needs help w/ this......idk if there is a FAQ that answers my question but here it is
It's difficult to place, so I guess the best place to start is what I've found out so far.
I know magenta is supposed to be used for what is transparent, (and black on some textures... ??) But when I use it, it's still there as a blob of magenta. And, oddly enough, sometimes when I try to create them, it asks me if I want to make magenta transparent, when there isn't even any. If I click yes, it says there's "erroneous colours". And a lot of times, it just says that out of the blue, like for Zelda's eyes. It's for that reason that I can't do Toon Link textures. They just won't create. And I've tried every different setting I could think of when saving and everything, but they still won't work... it's very irritating.

Indexing. For the record, ASH will ALWAYS ask you to answer 'y/n' to +1/+2 textures... If you didn't mess with them, just "n" and press on. HOWEVER. In this case... Textures that are NOT +2 and have applicable black blotches in their Alpha Layers, can have transparency. (Mess with the Alpha Layer.) Textures that ARE +2, you use Magenta. After you Magenta the appropriate area (ff00ff), you need to go to Image -> Mode -> Index Color... and apply appropriate Indexing properties. (Make sure not to exceed the original Index of the texture file or it will corrupt [Erroneous Colors]!) This is assuming you're using ASH and Photoshop. ...If you have no idea what I was talking about, search around for ]Syntax Error['s texture hacking guide. It explains how to appropriately Index +1 AND +2 textures.

If you're using The GIMP, you can edit the normal textures with ease, but only a few indexed textures work with that program. Lucario's face and Sonic's eye are a few indexed textures that work with The GIMP, but Meta Knight's eye has to be indexed through Photoshop in order to work.

I'm having trouble with ASH and index.
I'm using Gimp and have set Snake's "Atoma" to be a index color since it's +2. I set it to about 200. Open ASH, it asks me, I hit y, and it goes away. help?

It's very likely that you didn't index that texture in Photoshop. Not all indexed textures can be indexed through The GIMP; doing so usually leads to the erroneous colors error or causes ASH to quit before step 2 is even complete.
