I recolored one and it was a brighter color, and the result got significantly brighter.

Actually, from my experience with the black and white textures, it represents how bright the shine is. The shine, however, is a different color. I'll take my Luigi pipe for example - I recolored the pipe itself to be grey, but by leaving the black and white texture alone, there was still a few lines of green shine on the pipe when testing. Making it all black will remove the shine.

From what I see, these black and white textures are the enemy in texture hacking. They prevent the colors you put in from showing as much.
