Try indexing the hair with a palette of 48. If that doesn't work then I don't know.

I edited Ike's hair really easily. I don't get a single problem. Course I use Paint.NET not Adobe Photoshop

If using gimp, try and make sure that black isn't the first color in a pallet. That tends to screw up my modified ASH. That or just give in and use photoshop, that is pretty much flawless with ASH.

Gimp works for me i just cant get the hair black. it comes out messed up

I use GIMP as well, but the color's coming out fine, it's just the transparency that's screwed up.
