Ok. I don't need to know anything about CUPASH or making these files. I just need to know what to do when other people put their portraits up for download. Let's use an example:
Someone makes a Fierce Deity Link texture and puts the pac, pcs, and two TGA files up for download. The name of the two TGA files are "link2_big" and "link2_small".
First question, sometimes the names are weird like "(BlackN'Blue)bowser#_big". Am I supposed to rename the file a certain something? If so, what and how do I know which number to use?
Ok, now that I got my two TGA's appropriately named, what do I do with them? Can I get like...a step by step walkthrough to put portraits in my game?
Thanks for all the help!

Heh. I wonder whose Bowser that is... yeah I named them that to force people to realize that they needed to rename them. Easiest way to tell what number to use is... by looking at the template files provided by ASH --- match the number up character outfit you have replaced.
If you haven't already (which means you don't have anything in the templates file) you will need to extract "common5_en.pac" (or whatever the PAL version is) and place it in the "neededfiles" folder. After that, run step1_extract and... wait...
Once you've extracted, you'll never have to go through that process again.
Ok... then once you've got all your CSP files renamed to match the appropriate outfit and placed in the "newfiles" folder... run step2_create and wait. I can't say what to do about placing them back in the ISO... the readme should handle that. (I've never done it before)
And just a reminder, the numbering of the CSP files does not necessarily match the numbering of the PAC files.

OH, so your saying even if someone else makes these portraits, I'm still gonna need CUPASH? Ok. So after I've renamed them, put them in "newfiles" and run step2_create, what do I do after that? Can someone pick up where Picano left off?
Thanks Picano!!!

Sure.
Inside your "newfiles" folder will be three more folders: info, menu, and system. These names correspond to categories inside Partition 2 (Data) in your Brawl ISO. Inside each of these folders is another folder, which corresponds to a section in that category. For example, inside the "menu" folder is a "common" folder. Inside that "common" folder is a "char_bust_tex" folder. Inside that folder is a bunch of files.
On your ISO, you would navigate to Data>menu>common>char_bust_tex and start inserting all of the files you found in the char_bust_tex folder. Repeat for all three folders.

So I'm going to have to put in a bunch of files for just one portrait? And do that everytime I want another one? Dang...about how many files would I have to put in for one portrait? And how long would it take for that one portrait? Thanks Vyse

For just one CSP, you would need to put in the new common5_en.pac and one MenSelchrFaceXXX.brres file.

For just one CSP, you would need to put in the new common5_en.pac and one MenSelchrFaceXXX.brres file. Lol, sorry now I'm confused. Just two? I thought in the last post you told me to go through all these folders and replace a bunch of those files.

The info>portrite folder only has files in it if you change the in-battle portraits (the ones that appear next to your percentage). No matter what you change, a common5_en.pac will be generated (in the system folder). That's one.
Now, the char_bust_tex folder is where you get most of the files. Let's say you change one of Pit's portraits. There will be one file here: MenSelchrFaceXXX. If you change all of Pit's portraits, there will still be just one file here. But if you change one of Pit's and one of Samus's, there will be two.
So if you're changing just one portrait, you'll have the common5 and the MenSelchrFace that corresponds to the character whose portrait you changed.

well, i also have some questions about portraits, hope that people help me too I already tried a lot of CSP and in-battle portraits in my iso, and all worked fine, but my problem is about how i can release them. I know that the CSP needs to be in their targa, but i am not sure about the in-battle portraits, in targa or in their .brres??? i am not sure.... And secound, well, when I tested my textures, the only thing that don't changed, was the Victory Portraits, how and were i can reemplace them??? and yeah, thats all, nice to heard that we can change the recolor we wants to remplace just like the texture,
