If you know not of Pokemon, Zelda and AT LEAST a little bit of Metroid and Star Fox... I feel sorry for you.

List updated! Added some nub texture ideas, and also supplied their respective series/games (specified beside the names, i.e. "Lucario - Tom Nook [Animal Crossing]").
If I get a moment, I'll probably supply links to the characters, so to give... ideas on what they look like (pictures linking to either the characters, or pre-made renders of characters).

Well TeadyMKII I don't know how to make textures but I've got great ideas. I hope u like this single idea for ZELDA.

I think if u do a MICAIAH (Fire Emblem Goddess of Dawn Main character) texture for Zelda, Rosa (FFVII char, created by EE) should be nothing compared with a good MICAIAH texture!!!, that's for sure.

MICAIAH is the main character from Fire Emblem GoD, SHE MATCHS PERFECTLY WITH ZELDA!, she uses light magic, and a lot of ppl wanted Micaiah for Brawl, because the lack of feminine char in Brawl.

Why do I think it should be perfect? Because look at her, it matchs perfectly with Zelda! just adding semi transparency to the Zelda dress and u got it! adding some detaills and accesories (painted) and u got MICAIAH,
