+1 can NEVER have transparency. +2 must be specially done. (Magenta in ash or manual hexing) Normal uses the erase / add alpha channel method.

Oh, my bad, I didn't kno u were tryon to do it on +1 textures, yea, its not possible, picano: when I do it for normal textures, they also turn black, how do I fix that?

Some areas just turn up black no matter what.
Marth's cape, Samus's shoulders, etc. --- Only way to really know what can't be transparent is to test it out. (If you have any characters in mind, I can try it out later today --- attempt to make them 100% transparent)

Thanks! All good to know. How strange that only +1's can't be erased. On regular textures, can you use the method of indexing and inserting a color to be erased, i.e. the magenta thing, or is that only +2's?

There's no reason to do that on regular textures.

You can't do that on normal textures, on them you have to modify the alpha layer (which works differently with sifferent image editing software)

GIMP: In the image window, Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel.
