I tried to index them to 72/32, but FF00FF kept changing to another color after the indexing.

If it keeps changing, recolor everything magenta.. Then save.

Recolor the magenta areas a different color, or do you mean to make everything magenta...? I tried changing the wrong magenta to ff00ff, but apparently the index prevents me from using ff00ff...

I mean after you index it. Fill the whole background with magenta (FF00FF). Then save.
